Zahedan is a city in southeastern Iran and the capital of Sistan and Baluchestan Province, located in a dry, arid region close to the borders with Afghanistan and Pakistan. It lies far from the central and northern heartland of the country and serves as a regional economic and administrative hub in the southeast. The straight‑line distance from Zahedan to Tehran, the national capital in the north, is about 1 ,120 km, while road travel is longer by highway. From Zahedan to Mashhad in northeastern Iran is roughly 760-770 km in a straight line, and to Isfahan in central Iran about 940-945 km. Other major Iranian cities such as Shiraz lie even farther away at around 1,000 kilometres, reflecting Zahedan's position as one of the most distant major urban centers from the country’s northern and central population hubs.
