Ahvaz is a major city in southwestern Iran, serving as the capital of Khuzestan Province and lying on both banks of the Karun River near a low range of hills close to the border with Iraq. It is an important industrial and cultural center in the region. The straight-line distance from Ahvaz to Tehran, the national capital in the north of the country, is about 549 km, though the driving distance by road is closer to 810–820 km. From Ahvaz to Isfahan in central Iran is roughly 320 km as the crow flies. The city is much farther from Mashhad in the northeast, with a road distance exceeding 1,600 km. Ahvaz also lies several hundred kilometers from other major cities, illustrating its position deep in the southwest of the country relative to Iran’s principal urban centers.
