Esfahan (Isfahan) is a major city in central Iran and the capital of Isfahan Province, situated on a fertile plain along the Zayandeh River. It lies roughly in the heart of the country, making it a cultural and historical hub between the north, south, east, and west regions. The straight-line distance from Isfahan to Tehran, Iran's capital to the north, is about 339 km, though by road the journey is longer (around 450 km). From Isfahan to Shiraz in the south is approximately 480 km, and to Yazd in the southeast about 300 km. It is also several hundred kilometers from other major cities: for example, to Mashhad in the northeast is around 830 km, and to Karaj near Tehran about 359 km.
