Mashhad is a major city in northeastern Iran and the capital of Razavi Khorasan Province, located inland far from the coast and known for being one of the country’s largest and most important cultural, religious, and economic centers. It sits near Iran’s border with Turkmenistan and Afghanistan, lying well to the northeast of Tehran and the central plateau. The straight-line (air) distance from Mashhad to Tehran, the national capital in the north-west–central part of the country, is approximately 730-900 km depending on the measurement method, with road travel typically around 900 km by highway. From Mashhad to Isfahan in central Iran is about 830-833 km as the crow flies. The distance to Shiraz in the southwest is roughly 990–1,000 km in a straight line. Mashhad is also several hundred kilometres from other major Iranian cities - for example, it lies around 1,200 km from Tabriz in the northwest - highlighting its position as a far-eastern urban hub relative to Iran's principal cities.
