Kermanshah is a major city in western Iran, serving as the capital of Kermanshah Province and lying on the slopes of the Zagros Mountains near the border with Iraq. It occupies a strategic position in the western part of the country and is an important cultural and historical center. The straight-line distance from Kermanshah to Tehran, the national capital in the north-west–central part of Iran, is about 425-430 km, though the driving distance is nearer 500 km depending on the route. From Kermanshah to Isfahan in central Iran is roughly 466 km as the crow flies, and to Mashhad in the far northeast is about 1,155-1,160 km in a straight line. The city is also a few hundred kilometers from other significant centers: it’s about 396 km from Karaj near Tehran and around 424 km from Tabriz in the northwest, underscoring its western inland position relative to many of Iran’s largest urban areas.
