Most cities and towns in Iran are picturesque and well maintained. Dotted with beautiful gardens and patches of greenery, the landscape almost everywhere classifies as "breathtaking". If you are a traveler looking for something off the beaten track then here are some ideas.
Mahan
The city of Mahan lies toward the south-east of Kerman. About 6 km from the south of Mahan is a old palace called Shazdeh Baq (Bagh-e Shahzde). Built during the Qajar era this spectacular structure is the cynosure of all eyes in a large and beautiful garden dotted with pools and fountains and sheltered with some unusual trees. The traditional, restored guest house (caravanserai) in the city centre is a good place to stay.
Torghabe
A picturesque town located 20 km from Mashhad is an ideal getaway particularly in summer. Easily accessible by taxi or car, many youth from the city of Mashhad are known to even walk here. Apart from spending some quiet time, you can shop and sample local cuisine. Traditional restaurants serve the customary local food, dizi and dhishlik - which is roasted lamb served on a bed of rice. The local handicrafts and jewelry on offer at many stores in the area are inexpensive and make great gifts.
Known for its cool nights Torghabe is an excellent getaway in summer and is particularly picturesque in autumn.
Khaf
Drive for about 200 km south-east of Mashhad or just 50 km from the Afghan border and you reach Khaf, a tranquil destination. Only one of the many old windmills attached to millstones that are used to grind wheat is still functional. Located at the back is an ancient cemetery where you will come across some old and unique tombstones. If peace, quiet and stretches of unpopulated land is what you are seeking, Khaf is definitely worth the drive.
Zoshk
To experience the magic of the Persian countryside, head out to Zoshk, a tiny village to the west of Mashhad. Whether you decide to take a walk at dawn or sunset, you will find the air invigorating. Enjoy the landscape and bask in the glory of doing nothing at all as you let the sights and sounds of Iranian country life rejuvenate you.
Neishabur
Camping out at Nesihabur, near Mashhad, is something you should try especially if you are in Iran during spring. The lush greenery and fresh air is something you will enjoy as you join Iranian families while they cook their meals under a blanket of stars. The area is dotted with beautiful gardens. The Omar Khayyam tomb complex is the main attraction in the town.
Bandar-e-Torkman
Located on the Caspian shore, Bandar-e-Torkman is home to one of Iran's major beach resorts. Family-sized beach huts here are quite a draw for the people of Tehran. There are of course, two different long boards, one for men and the other for women, at a distance of half a kilometer from each other.
