As well as the odd car on top of a building, there are quite a lot on the ground. As of 2014, surveys indicated over 2.4 million personal cars and over 400,000 motorbikes were owned by households in Tehran. Iran’s total registered motor vehicles reached nearly 16 million by 2020. Given that Tehran is the economic and political capital, a significant portion of these vehicles operate in the metropolitan area. As of late 2024, more than 60% of the national vehicle fleet was reported to be over 10 years old. The high volume of traffic in Tehran is supported by the fact that the country has a high vehicle-per-capita ratio compared to the rest of Asia, with roughly 183 vehicles per 1,000 people.
