Tehran is littered with American classic car relics from the 1970's. Why is this?
During the oil boom of the 1970s, many luxury foreign cars manufactured before the Islamic Revolution were brought into Iran by students returning from studies abroad and by government officials. These individuals were permitted to import a car tax-free, either for personal use or to sell at a substantial profit.
