Tehran Metro & Metro Map

Tehran metro.Tehran's metro system is clean, cheap and efficient and an ideal way to avoid the traffic snarl above ground.

Single journey tickets start at around IR1000 (expect this to change) and can also be bought for 10 journeys or as 1, 3 and 7 day travel cards. There are also monthly, 3-monthly, 6-monthly and annual tickets.

Hours of operation on the Tehran metro are from 6am to 10pm or 10.30pm. Station and train announcements are in Farsi only. Tehran's buses connect with metro stations.

Carriages can be extremely packed at peak times; the first and last cars are reserved for women. If you are female, use them.

Tehran's subway system is a work in progress, and when finally completed (in another decade or so) will be longer than the New York subway. Presently (2008) only sections of Line 1 (Red), Line 2 (Blue) and all of Line 5 (Green) are fully in operation. The Tehran metro carries over a million people daily.

Tehran Metro

The metro in Tehran first opened in 1999 and at present consists of 3 lines: Line 1 (red line), Line 2 (blue line) and Line 5 (green line). There are plans for a total of 9 lines on the drawing board.

The suburban Line 5 was the first to open and links Tehran to Mehrshahr, 40km west of the capital.
Line 2 connects with Line 5 at Tehran Station and runs east-west, intersecting with the north-south Line 1 at Imam Khomeini Square. Visitors to the historic town of Rey can ride all the way there on Line 1.

The Tehran metro operates daily from 6am-10pm and fares are presently 1000 Rials (2008) for one single journey.
Magnetic strip 1-Day, 3-Day, 7-Day, monthly, 3-monthly, 6-monthly and annual passes are all available.

Many of the stations are beautifully decorated with traditional tile mosaics.

Metro systems are also planned for other Iranian cities, including Mashhad and Esfahan.
