Iran can experience extremes of temperatures with very cold winters and scorching summers.

Much of the interior of Iran is made up of a high mountain plateau averaging from 900-3,000m above sea level. This highland plateau is flanked by the Alborz mountains to the north and the Zagros mountains to the south.

Iran is bordered by Afghanistan and Pakistan to the east, Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan to the north, Turkey and Iraq to the west.

The hottest and driest months in Tehran, Mashhad, Tabriz and Esfahan are June, July, August and September. Esfahan is particularly dry in summer.

The Persian Gulf coast is especially hot and humid in the summer months (June to August) with temperatures mostly over 40 degrees Centigrade. Spring and autumn are by far the best times for any visit to Iran. Winters (December to February) are cold, particularly at night but often clear and fine during the days.

Rainfall is highest throughout the country in the period from November to May with the area north of the Alborz mountains and along the Caspian coast receiving the most precipitation.

The more wooded areas bordering the Caspian Sea, including the towns of Rasht, Chalous, Noshahr and Gorgan have a wetter climate than the more arid interior. Rain here occurs throughout the year especially from late summer period to early winter.

Much of Iran south and east of the capital Tehran is semi-desert with low annual rainfall well below 300mm per year.
