Trains to Iran

The weekly Trans-Asia Express train runs from Istanbul to Tehran via Ankara (Turkey) and Tabriz (Iran).
It is possible to continue your journey to Damascus in Syria after crossing Lake Van in Turkey. This weekly train service between Damascus and Tehran consists of Pullman and sleeping cars from Damascus to Tatvan (in Turkey) and couchette cars from Van to Tehran.

There are occasional trains to Zahedan in Iran from Quetta in Pakistan.

Trains within Iran

Iran has currently over 6,000 km of railway and over 350 railway stations and is expanding the network. All journeys start out of Tehran. Tehran is the crossing-point for the Trans-Iranian line from the Persian Gulf to the Caspian Coast and the east-west line from Mashhad to Tabriz.
Rail travel especially in First Class is both comfortable, safe and cheap and there is often a restaurant car on the train. Sleeper services are available. Tickets can be booked up to a month in advance.

The longest stretch of track is the 1483 km journey from Tehran to the port of Bandar-e Abbas on the Strait of Hormoz in the Persian Gulf.

There are daily rail services from Tehran to Esfahan and Kerman.
