Bandar-e Anzali
Originally developed by the Russians in the nineteenth century, Bandar-e Anzali is now Iran's major port on the Caspian Sea - the world's largest lake and producer of 95% of the world's caviar.
The city and local area sites include the long harbour promenade and the nearby delta of the Sefid Rud - the world's largest fresh water lagoon.
There is scant reminder of Bandars neo-colonial past except for a row of Russian house facades and an Armenian church near Imam Khomeini Square.
The lagoon is an important sanctuary for wildlife, especially birds and can be accessed by speed-boat or a local fishing vessel.
Access
Bandar is accessible from Rasht by savari (shared taxi) in about 30 minutes. The nearest airport is also at Rasht with flights to Tehran and Mashhad with Iran Air.
